Respecting Religions

Human cultures may differ, and yet share many commonalities. Regardless of how we celebrate life's moments, cherishing special moments with your loved ones is often a sacred experience. While allowing time for reflection, I am undoubtedly grateful to have come so far, despite the odds against my survival. I was given a religious name, Vishnu, which is a Hindu god. The fantastic thing is, I was never a religious person; I am just spiritual. I respect the diverse religions and faiths of many, as well as their fundamental teachings. I learn from all the teachings and apply them in the best way I can to my life. My values and beliefs are grounded in my upbringing and the diverse knowledge I have gained over the years. Considering that there are over eight billion people in this world, from multiple faiths and followings, was this God's divine plan? Who knows? Respecting religions does not mean you conform to another religion; it simply means you show respect and expect the same in return.

"Jesus's command to love one's neighbor is seen as the foundation for treating individuals of other faiths with respect, irrespective of their beliefs." Love and Kindness (Matthew 22:37-39)

“Being brilliant is no great feat if you respect nothing.”
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The fact is, people of these diverse faiths and followings have a divine right to choose their own faith or spiritual path. In every faith in our world, there exist the same basic religious principles and teachings that we all follow. Our world is changing, with poverty, wars, natural disasters, constant racism, and prejudice. History has taught us so much, but some of us seem not to have learned from it. Maybe we do see this, or we seem to ignore it. The only thing that has changed over the years is the lack of respect we have for one another. It is evident that the manipulation of these religious teachings and principles is rampant, and the lessons from history are ignored.

"The essence of all spiritual life is your emotion, your attitude toward others. Once you have pure, sincere motivation, the rest follows. You can develop the right attitude toward others based on kindness, love, respect, and on the clear realization of the oneness of all human beings."
— Dalai Lama

"All religions must be tolerated... for every man must
get to heaven in his own way."
- Epictetus

We find guidance through our faith, where our meaning, strength, and life's purpose are nourished and sustained. Respecting ourselves and others enables our empathy and understanding to develop over time. Faith and respect are undoubtedly intertwined in our lives, influencing our perception of the world around us. Our actions are shaped by what we learn through faith, and when we discover truth in God's teachings, our lives are guided by his essence. The same applies to respect: as we respect ourselves, we must also respect others. Our basic understandings are the same, regardless of the challenges of the cultures in which we were born. We all find comfort and peace in what our religions have taught, and it is essential to acknowledge that it did not teach us to hate one another. That alone is man's doing, and history has taught us this.

“This principle urges treating others, including those with different spiritual beliefs, as one would want to be treated, fostering peaceful interaction.” The Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12)

"All religions, arts, and sciences are branches of the
same tree."
- Albert Einstein

Nonetheless, people remain blinded by their own illusions and continue to repeat the mistakes of the past. Religious hypocrisy and manipulation are widespread and are the cause of many of society's problems. Terrorism and other acts of violence that stem from the false interpretations of religious teachings cause more harm and destruction all over the world, and we see this transpire all the time. Do we blame the religion or the people of that culture? Blame should be placed directly at the root cause, and not just paint everyone with the same color. Social coexistence is not merely a fallacy; we need a profound understanding to recognize that mutual respect is essential for all to coexist. Faith can give us the behavioral restraint and the tolerance we need to find common ground for all humankind. Respect plays a significant role in how we interact with our fellow humankind and helps in building core relationships. The intersection of faith and respect creates a meaningful, socially connected society. The better we understand one another, the more we will sustain meaningful relationships for all to find comfort in.

"The essence of all religions is one. Only their
approaches are different."
- Mahatma Gandhi

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, his background,
or his religion".
- Nelson Mandela

Among our many faiths and followings, there is a plague that is growing, one that will ultimately destroy us all. We all see this happening. The growth of religious hypocrites. Those who use God's name in vain, regardless of what their faith comes from. These people steal from the helpless, kill and destroy, spread hate, and manipulate the gullible in the name of their beliefs. Then there are those people who commit these atrocious acts because they can and do not care. Our fundamental shared values and beliefs remain the same; the only noticeable change is the lack of respect we have for each other.

"There will be no lasting peace on earth unless we learn not merely to tolerate but even to respect other faiths than our own."
— Mahatma Gandhi

"All religions try to benefit people, with the same
The basic message of the need for love and compassion,
for justice and honesty, for contentment."

- Dalai Lama

So instead of condemning each other’s values and beliefs, ask yourself where respect for one another has gone, or did we ever respect each other in the first place? Consider this, some individuals in society are simply lost souls, for whom
respect is neither possible nor warranted, and there is little to no hope for them. As for the rest of us, we can all treat one another with compassion, empathy, understanding, humility, kindness, and enable faith and respect to flow naturally. Faith and respect for yourself are fundamentally essential, as they enable you to respect others' faith. Live up to your own values and beliefs, while respecting others with an open heart and mind. Have the faith to believe in yourself, the strength to stand the test of time, and the courage to follow through.

“When you are content to be simply yourself and
Don't compare or compete, everybody will respect
you.”
- Lao Tzu

"We should all consider each other as human beings,
and we should respect each other."
- Malala Yousafzai

"All religions try to benefit people, with the same basic message of the need for love and compassion, for justice and honesty, for contentment."

- Dalai Lama
